The one big mistake everybody makes when dealing with a spill, a spot or a stain is to panic.
Everybody rushes to the cupboard under the sink and brings back a big armful of every possible cleaning product located there.
Then they proceed to spray and tip a little of everything onto the affected area.
When it fizzizes up or starts to bubble, they call other family members present over to see what is happening.
Then they grab a cloth and scrub and scrub and scrub damaging the carpet fibres and leaving another mark where the fibres have become damaged which stands out more that the offending spill itself!
By doing this they have caused a chemical reaction between the spill, spot or stain and the variety of cleaning chemical added making the complete removal by a professional cleaner almost impossible.
The spill has been changed to a perment stain. UN removable.
With liquid spills such as red wine, the addition of white wine is nothing short of a waste.
All that is happening is you are diluting the red wine with the white and spreading it over a wider area and putting it deeper into the carpet.
In a very few instances using a soda siphon, if you still have one gathering dust can, through the bubbles it produces, bring the offending spill to the surface, but it still requires to be soaked up with a white cloth (must be white to avoid colour transfer back to the carpet) or plain white kitchen paper made into a pad and placed onto the spill area with some heavy books like yellow pages placed on top and left for up to 12 to 24 hours to allow the paper or cloth to absorb the spill.
To be very basic about clearing up a spill, in the morning you jump into the shower, put shampoo into your hair, you don’t then jump out with the shampoo still in your hair, you rinse it out.
When using off the shelf spot & stain removers such as 1001, Mr Muscle ECT, these have a very high soap content. And also contain a mild bleaching agent which will leave a noticeable whiter patch on your carpet.
In cases where we are called in to clean carpets after the owner has tried to do it themselves, we find all sorts of funny patterns on the carpet where the off the shelf product has been applied to the carpet, sometimes looking like secret messages written in an unknown language!
You apply the off the shelf spot cleaning product to the offending mark and in a lot of cases, hey presto, they disappear, job completed.
Then 2 to 3 days later they re appear but in a larger size.
What happens is the addition of the product waters down the mark and pushes it deeper into the pile of the carpet which makes it appear to have disappeared.
Then when it dries out through process of capillary action (also known as wicking) the liquid climbs back up the carpet pill to re appears, but bigger.
If left it starts to turn a dark shade of brown or black.
This is the soap which is tacky attracting dust and dirt which is circulating in all our homes these days despite the best dusting and vacuuming.
There are two ways to prevent this:
- Throw away all those off the shelf products.
- If you must use them, then you must apply a clean white cloth of a pad of white kitchen paper as described above to absorb the product and the soap out of the carpet.
